Reign took control from the very beginning — and the Pride couldn’t stir a comeback.

A two-goal performance from Eugenie Le Sommer paired with an opener from Bethany Balcer was enough to secure OL Reign a 3-0 victory over the Orlando Pride on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.

“First of all, credit to the Reign. They came out definitely on fire and their shape gave us a bit of a problem,” Pride interim coach Becky Burleigh said after. “I think that was on us as coaches, we have to adjust to that a little bit sooner because their numbers were just overwhelming us, particularly in the midfield.”

The loss snapped a three-game unbeaten streak for the Pride. The result for Orlando also broke a seven-match scoring run — the third time the Pride is left scoreless during this regular season.

OL Reign improved their unbeaten run to six games.

Reign opened the game with high pressure and that eventually led to the opening goal when a cross sent into the area from Sofia Huerta found Bethany Balcer, who headed the ball past Ashlyn Harris to give the home side the 1-0 lead in the third minute.

That pressure continued to give the Pride struggles mostly in the midfield and eventually into their defensive third when a turnover from Amy Turner saw Dzsenifer Marozsan dish the ball to Eugenie Le Sommer, who struck the ball from 30 yards out, catching Harris off her line to double Reign’s lead 2-0 in the 28th minute.

Moments later, Reign made it 3-0 when a combination play started by Jessica Fishlock connected with Marozsán and then Le Sommer to slot the ball from close past Harris to triple the lead in the 32nd minute.

Le Sommer nearly secured her hat-trick after hitting a volley off the crossbar before halftime.

Orlando falls to 7-6-7, with 28 points on the standings.
