2ND UPDATE: Orlando City and MLS released a statement on the clubs social media platforms, stating that they have terminated the contract of Jonathan Suárez. The defender mutually agreed to the termination in order to focus on the allegations made against him.
1ST UPDATE: MLS has suspended Jonathan Suárez pending investigations. In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the league said that they “will remain in close communication with the Orlando City SC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Association during this investigation. MLS will make further determinations concerning the player’s status as more information becomes available.”
ORIGINAL STORY: Having been just joined Orlando City less than a month ago, newly acquired defender Jonathan Suárez was arrested Tuesday evening on alleged sexual assault charges.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s department, Suárez and his brother, Rafael Suárez Jr, were arrested after an investigation by a Special Investigation Detective concluded that both Suarez brothers could be positively identified based on the witness’ report and evidence.
The club released a statement early Wednesday morning to the Orlando Sentinel: “Late Tuesday night, Orlando City SC became aware that defender Jonathan Suárez was arrested in Osceola County. The club takes these allegations very seriously and is currently gathering more information No further comment will be provided by the club until additional investigation of the alleged incident is complete.”
