Orlando City forward Daryl Dike will be heading overseas to compete in the English Championship.

The Lions announced on Monday that the 20-year-old forward will be sent on a short-term loan to Barnsley FC.

“Daryl had a tremendous rookie season with us here in Orlando, one that helped lead our Club to the postseason and, on a personal level, be rewarded with multiple call-ups to the U.S. Men’s National Team,” Orlando City EVP of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi said. “We believe this opportunity with Barnsley will present another step in his career, to not only develop in a new footballing environment, but to challenge himself in a new country and we’re excited for him to bring those learnings back to us here in Orlando.”

There is a Right to Recall condition on the loan, which the Lions could exercise to bring Dike back. But according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Julia Poe, the loan deal also includes an option to buy for $20 million for 80% of Dike’s right — should Barnsley sell Dike in the future, Orlando would receive 20% of that future sell, the Sentinel also reports.

It’s also worth noting there is no timeline on Dike’s return to Orlando City, but moving abroad does put him in a position to showcase his skills under the scope of English and European scouts.

Dike scored 8 goals and recorded 4 assists in 17 games during his rookie season with the Lions in 2020, playing as an integral figure in Oscar Pareja’s playoff-contending team.

The 2020-2021 season of the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, currently runs through May with games being played normally twice a week.

Dike recently made his debut for the United States men’s national team on Sunday during a 7-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago at Exploria Stadium.

The 2021 Major League Soccer season is scheduled to kickoff on April 3.
