A streak was bound to end entering Sunday night’s game.
For the Orlando Pride, it was their home unbeaten streak.
After taking initially taking the lead, the Pride succumbed to a late collapse as goals from Dagny Brynjarsdottir and Lindsey Horan lifted the Portland Thorns past the Pride 2-1 in front of 7,143 at Camping World Stadium.”
“We just went to sleep. We got walked on,” said Pride coach Tom Sermanni. “They started to push Lindsey Horan farther up the field. We got walked on in that they were playing a little more direct because they were chasing the game. We never really adjusted to that.
“It’s a fairly simple adjustment and they scored two goals. They basically had to do nothing to create and really did nothing that should have caused us any problems. It’s really down to very poor lack of concentration, lack of defense, lack of positioning and not reading where the dangers may be.”
For the second consecutive game this season, Jasmyne Spencer scored for Orlando (5-6-0, 15 points). The former Flash player struck the ball from outside the box, hitting to the top left corner of the net to give the Pride the lead in the 67th minute.
With the Pride dominating most of the game, the last 10 minutes of the game proved to be costly for Sermanni’s team. Goals from Dagny in the 79th minute and Horan seconds before stoppage time ensured Portland will remain unbeaten in NWSL play by improving to 6-0-5 with 23 points atop the standings.
Both teams last met during the opening week of the season with the Thorns claiming a 2-1 victory over the Pride.
Tobin Heath nearly scored the opening goal for Portland before halftime after striking the ball off the crossbar.
Jamia Fields, who made her first start for Orlando last Thursday, was named to the bench on Sunday, but made an appearance in the 57th minute.
The Orlando Pride will remain at home for their next game on Sunday, July 10 against the Boston Breakers at 5 p.m.
