The Lions are heading to the next round of the Open Cup.
David Mateos’ second-half goal lifted Orlando City past Jacksonville Armada 1-0 Wednesday night during fourth round action of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The victory advances the Lions to the fifth round of the tournament. A draw which will determine Orlando’s opponent for the following round is scheduled for Thursday, June 16.
Julio Baptista could of given Orlando the lead less than a minute into the game after Carlos Rivas dished a ball over to the Brazilian for the shot, but the ball was sent high over the crossbar.
Orlando City scored the game’s only goal when Antonio Nocerino’s corner kick connected with Baptista, who headed the ball toward Mateos for an easy finish at goal in the 62nd minute.
2,155 was the announced attendance at Southern Oak Stadium in Jacksonville. Adrian Heath opted to employ a mostly reserve starting lineup: Edwards Jr, Boden, Redding, Mateos, Alston, Carrasco (c), Heath, Rivas, Nocerino, Barry, Baptista.
Orlando City returns to MLS play when it hosts the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday at Camping World Stadium. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
