Alex Morgan is back and ready for Sunday’s Orlando Pride season-opener against the Portland Thorns at Providence Park.
The United States international missed a chunk of preseason after sustaining a hip injury during a friendly game last month, but Pride head coach Tom Sermanni confirmed Thursday during the team’s media day that the striker is fit for this weekend’s clash against Portland.
“She’s fit, healthy and ready to go,” Sermanni said. “She will be starting on Sunday. Whether she plays the full 90 minutes or not, that will all depend on quite a few factors. But at this moment in time, she’s playing and will be playing significant minutes.”
For Morgan, Sunday’s game will mark a return to Portland, where she played for the Thorns for three seasons before getting traded to the Pride in October 2015.
“Not having been with my teammates as much for preseason, I know for them it was really tough,” Morgan said. “It’s exciting to have this weekend and to be able to showcase what we’ve learned this month and grown. We have high expectations, and we’re going to continue to grow in the next few months.”
Kickoff for Sunday’s game at Portland is set for 10 p.m. Fans can watch the match via YouTube.
