University of Akron midfielder Richie Laryea was selected as the seventh pick of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by the Orlando City Soccer Club on Thursday at the Baltimore Convention Center.
The Toronto native played all 20 games for Akron during his only year as a freshman with the Zips.
Laryea signed a Major League Soccer contract on Jan. 5.
With Laryea heading to play for the Central Florida outfit, Orlando City SC’s midfield will absorb more depth heading into its second MLS season.
As for local players, University of Central Florida forward Hadji Barry will be the first Knight to play for Orlando City.
OCSC traded targeted allocation money and a second-round pick to D.C. United for the 13th-overall pick to acquire the UCF product.
Orlando City will commence the 2016 season when Real Salt Lake visits the Orlando Citrus Bowl on March 6 with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
